SWBOCES' Adult Literacy programs at heart of reborn Mamaroneck community center
Partnership with Community Resource Center one of many across the county
Southern Westchester BOCES’ Adult Literacy Programs rely on strong community partnerships like the one with the Community Resource Center in Mamaroneck, which returned this year after flood damage forced it to close four years ago.
SWBOCES instructors are teaching English as a Second Language, GED and Citizenship exam preparation as well as hospitality in four classrooms, and enrollment is soaring.
“We are very thankful to have this partnership because they’re one of those partners that’s always happy to help BOCES,” Program Supervisor Maria Guerrero said. “They’re happy to have us offering our educational services there.”
The partnership began in 2010. Flooding from Hurricane Ida forced the CRC to close in 2021 for renovations. The process of moving back in and resuming programs began in April.
The CRC was founded 27 years ago with a single English class and one case manager. Its growth since then, with more than 6,000 clients and a staff of 21, is a result of growing need in the community.
CRC provides BOCES with classroom space rent-free, and its programs complement CRC’s legal services and workforce development offerings.
“We have the same mission to help the community and those with low incomes in the area,” Ms. Guerrero said.
Jirandy Martinez, the CRC’s Executive Director, said renovations required extensive fundraising. The organization relocated temporarily and worked closely with SWBOCES in the meantime to continue programming.
“Now we’re finally back here,” Ms. Martinez said. ”SWBOCES has been such a big part of our mission and our success in the community.”
A formal grand opening is set for Sept. 15.
