IMPORTANT PROGRAM INFORMATION
- Programs include classes for those seeking to earn their high school equivalency diploma, improve their English language skills or study for the US Citizenship test.
- Adult Literacy Program courses are of no tuition costs to student and are made available through BOCES by grants and state aid that are geared towards growing the regional workforce.
- Classes are offered year round
- Classes are held in a variety of community-based locations
- Students must be age 21+
- Students must attend orientation, complete registration and placement testing in-person

High School Equivalency Prep
Pass the High School Equivalency Exam and earn your diploma!
Teachers will prepare you in reading, writing, math, science, social studies and science. Students will get skills to pass the high school equivalency exam, enroll in college, and be successful in life. Students must take a TABE assessment test at registration. Eighth grade level in reading, writing and math is required to join classes.
These classes are offered at no cost to students. Classes are supported by Employment Preparation Education and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds made available through the NYS Education Dep't.

Citizenship Exam Prep
Take advantage of this preparation class and practice the interview for the naturalization process. The teachers will review the information needed to pass the exam along with the basic test-taking skills. Students will learn about the History of the United States. The class will practice the last version of the citizenship exam and the 100 citizenship questions. (Haga clic aquí para obtener información en español.)

English Language Instruction
We have more than 80 classes in the area and we offer different schedules for your convenience, including day time, evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. We are located at 20 different sites close to you.
These classes are offered at no cost to students. Classes are supported by Employment Preparation Education and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds made available through the NYS Education Dep't.

WHAT ARE THE LEVELS?
In the BASIC level, you will learn how to read, write and speak in English. Class activities will prepare you to communicate better. In the INTERMEDIATE level, you will re-enforce vocabulary, reading, and writing, and there is more emphasis in conversation. In the ADVANCED level there is more conversational activities and the levels of reading and writing are higher.

Learn English and Earn Digital Literacy Certification!
Gain necessary computer skills for employability as you prepare for a Nationally Recognized Certification Exam:
- IC3 – Internet and Computing Core Certification (Must pass all three (3) parts)
- Computer Fundamentals
- Key Applications
- Living Online
Course Approach:
Instructional methods of this course include lecture, discussion, group activities, independent research, field research projects, examinations, and presentations.
With ESL Immersion Component. Students must be enrolled in both ESL and IC3 course. Students must attend 150 hours of computer instruction while attending English classes and sit for all 3 parts of the IC3 Exam to complete the program.
Learn English and Earn ServSafe Food Handler Certification!
Gain necessary food handling skills for employability as you prepare for a Nationally Recognized Certification Exam:

A food handler is anyone who works in a food business and who either handles food or touches surfaces that are likely to be in contact with food such as cutlery, plates and bowls. transport, distribution, sale, supply, and services. This course will enable students to perform food handling functions, and introduces them to information about preparation, manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation , distribution, sales and services.
Course Approach:
Instructional methods of this course include lecture, discussion, group activities, hands -on skill practices and examinations.
With ESL Immersion Component. Students must be enrolled in both ESL and ServSafe Food Handler Certification course. Students must attend 100 hours of ServSafe instruction while attending English classes and demonstrate all skills required for certification.

Need a copy of your High School Equivalency Diploma?
If you studied with SWBOCES and took either the GED or the TASC and earned your diploma by passing the test, your diploma was issued by the NY State Education Department. You can request a copy of your diploma by completing their form and returning it to their office in Albany. Please go to the link to NYSED here for detailed information.
